Leemah Carneh is seen in King County Superior Court on Wednesday, November 5, 2008.
SEATTLE -- A King County Superior Court judge ruled Wednesday that accused killer Leemah Carneh is still not competent to stand trial in a quadruple slaying.
Carneh, 27, is charged with the murders of Josie Peterson - an Evergreen High School cheerleader prosecutors say he was obsessed with - her boyfriend, Taelor Marks, and his grandparents, Richard and Leola Larson. Their bodies were found March 9, 2001, in the Larsons' Des Moines home.
Prosecutors thought Carneh had recovered enough to face murder charges now, but Judge Palmer Robinson ruled Carneh is still not yet competent to help his own attorneys with the case and is hindered by delusions.
The judge sent Carneh back to Western State Hospital for 180 days for continued treatment, saying Carneh is still a danger to the community.
The original charges against Carneh were dismissed in October, 2005, after doctors diagnosed him with paranoid schizophrenia and a judge ruled that he was not competent to stand trial. Carneh was committed to Western State Hospital where he has remained since the ruling.
Prosecutors refilled murder charges in 2007 after Western State officials determined Carneh was doing well enough that he could be moved to a ward where he would not be constantly supervised and could earn permission to leave the hospital grounds.
Family members of the victims were distraught over Wednesday's ruling, saying they are unable to find closure while they keep waiting for a trial.
"He had my sister's cheerleading jacket, which was full of blood, he had rings that Taelor had given to her, necklaces, there's plenty of evidence leading to him," said Josie Peterson's sister, Priscilla Andrews. "His only defense is to claim that he's crazy, which we all know that he's not.
"We want to see him in prison. That is what we want. That is our main goal here."
Carneh would face life in prison if convicted.
