AUBURN, Wash. -- Officials say rescue divers believe they have found a car that was swept down the Green River on Friday, but waters are moving too quickly for divers to safely search the vehicle.

Capt. Kyle Ohashi says there's "not much hope" for two boys, ages 2 and 13, who were believed to be in the car.

Officials initially said the older boy was 14 years old, but family members at the scene said he was 13.

The 16-year-old girl who was driving made it out and survived.

Auburn police Sgt. Scott Near said the driver called 911 just before 9 a.m. and told dispatchers she lost control of her Volkswagen Beetle and swerved into the river in the 29800 block of Green River Road.

The girl told police that as water began to fill the car, she tried to free a 13 year old and 2-year-old child who were still in the vehicle, but she was not able to get them out.

"She's pretty distraught and shaken up," Near said.

Auburn Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan Bosch said the girl told him the river current pushed her back from the vehicle as she tried to rescue the two boys.

"She told me it was floating -- she was trying to get the car before it was submerged," Bosch said. "Upon my arrival we never saw a vehicle. It's a dark, fast-moving murky river."

The girl, who officials said is the aunt of one of the boys, swam to shore where she flagged down help and called 911. She's currently being treated at Auburn Regional Medical Center.

Curt Beaupre, uncle of the missing 2-year-old boy, said the driver tried to get 2-year-old Hunter Beaupre out and thought the teenage passenger would be able to get out on his own through an open window.

"She tried everything she could," Beaupre said.

The mother of the 2-year-old boy recently had knee surgery, Beaupre said, and the 16-year-old driver was apparently helping get the child to daycare. He did not know why the 13-year-old boy, who is Hunter's cousin, was in the car.

Chad Beaupre, Hunter's father, said he would sit and wait by the river until his son's body is pulled from the water and put in his arms. The grief-stricken father said the driver is not to blame for the tragic accident.

"I'm really thinking about her right now, a lot," he said. "I know she is having a hard time with this, so she's a big concern of mine right now, too. I love her a lot. It's not her fault."

Police shut down area roads, and dive teams from several agencies rushed to the scene and spent hours searching the murky waters.

Boats and helicopters were also called in to help, and divers located what they think is the vehicle at about 11 a.m.

Ohashi said divers found a large metal object that is on its side that they believe is the car. River currents were moving so quickly and heavy rains have severely hampered visibility in the river that divers have not been able to determine for sure whether the two kids are inside.

Firefighters suspended their dive efforts and initially expected to go back in devising a plan for what Ohashi said is now being considered a recovery operation, but by 1:30 p.m., officials said the recovery may not happen until Saturday.

"Visibility is almost non-existent. Our divers can just simply not operate in that condition," said Ohashi.

King County sheriff spokesman John Urquhart said the sheriff's office is taking over the recovery and, because of the dangerous river currents, recovery could take several days.

Friends and family of the two kids have gathered near the rescue command post and were speaking with a fire department chaplain.

The name of the missing 13-year-old boy has not been released.

Updates will be published as more information becomes available.
