The Schrammie: Gobbling up too much P.C.
By Ken Schram
SEATTLE -- Rampaging political correctness lurks around every corner.
It creates the impression that our society will be a better place if we all just play along. And so I'd like to invite Highline School Superintendent John P. Welch to put his pilgrim's hat on the shelf and come on down. ![]() The Highline district is on a mission to peel back the myths behind the first Thanksgiving. Johnny P. is telling teachers that inaccurate stereotypes of the puritans and the Indians who broke bread and baked yams almost 400 years ago need to be busted. By all means, let's blow up Thanksgiving in the pursuit of political correctness. Instead of teaching kids about the trail of tears, or the Indian Removal Act of 1832 or any of the host of U.S. government measures designed to cheat, steal and kill American Indians throughout our country's history, let's instead take the joy out of Thanksgiving by tackling the issue of whether paper hats and feathers are historically accurate. So, for spooning up some indigestible mental gravy while proving that a politically correct mind is a terrible thing to baste, take a bow John P., because this "Schrammie" is for you.
