Kathi Goertzen talks about radiation, road ahead

An update on Kathi Goertzen's condition by Dan Lewis, Dec. 3.

Kathi says hi to all of her viewers. She's so thankful for all your thoughts and prayers.

Things are going well. Kathi has finished 13 radiation treatments, and she sounded good.

I asked her what's next in her recovery from surgery for her brain tumor:

"I've finished all the radiation now and I'm just in the healing mode. And I'm doing really well, feeling better every day. Now I'm just doing the try-to-be-patient thing, and getting a little bit better each day. And I feel good."

As for the radiation treatment, Kathi said it wasn't anything she couldn't handle.

"You know, I think a lot of people that go through radiation know that it's not something that really hurts while you're getting it. It's not something that's real difficult at the time. Although I laid there for an hour each time and you have to stay pretty still. But the after effects, I think it kind of knocks you out a little bit, makes you a little tired. And I've had a few headaches, but not too bad. So it's not the worst thing and hopefully it did what it was supposed to do."

It will be a while - as long as a few months - before Kathi finds out whether the radiation did its job.

"I'm hoping I'll get some kind of good news around Christmas, which would be a really nice Christmas present. But right now I feel thankful it's all behind me and I'm looking forward to getting back there with you!"

That's right, Kathi can't wait to come back to KOMO.

"'Impatient' would be an understatement. You know me, and you know I like things to click along. And the news business is a fast-moving thing and there's nothing about this that has been fast-moving. So yeah, I'm impatient. But you just have to let your body heal and that's what I'm doing, and I'm getting there."

And as always, Kathi is very grateful for all your messages and well-wishes.

"I never have felt alone in all of this. All the prayers and wonderful wishes and people have never left me; they're with me every step of the way. And to all the people that have been there for me, I just have to continue to say thank you. And I really have no way of saying just how much it helps and how much I appreciate it."
