SEATTLE -- A network of streetcars may very well be in the city's future, according to the latest vote by the Seattle City Council.

On Monday the council passed with a 6-3 vote a resolution in support of developing a streetcar network.

Council member Sally Clark calls the South Lake Union Streetcar a poor little orphan. Most agree with her that the line needs to be connected to other areas of the city.

More than 500,000 people have hopped on and off the South Lake Union line this year, exceeding expectations by more than 200,000. Some riders who use the streetcar to commute to work want to see the line expanded.

"I think if it goes all over, it would be really good," said Nural Orgun. "It's a really nice way of commuting, and it would be really easy to get to Fremont or Ballard and the other places they were talking about."

"I think it would be a good idea to get it to the International District and I think First Hill would be great, too," said Suong Che.

But others disagree, including Boris Kastianos. He represents 16 property owners on First Avenue. That's where the central line would run from South Lake Union.

"Received nothing but negative feedback," he said.

Other lines being considered would run to the International District, First Hill, Fremont to Ballard.

Council member Jan Drago said her resolution supporting such a streetcar network is purely conceptual to get the city on track.

"Our goal is to build an inter-modal, integrated, seamless transportation system," she said.

But without a clear source of funding, Drago's goal is but a pie in the sky to council member Richard McIver.

"You got an orphan out here you say you got to help grow up by getting it some siblings. But we don't know where they're going to go. We don't know how many we need and we still ain't got no money," he said.

McIver said though he does not support this specific resolution due to its lack of funding, he does support the expansion of public transportation.

A plan is already in the works to build a streetcar line from First Hill to Capitol Hill using Sound Transit funds. However, the new line does not address the council's concerns of connecting the lines in order to form a network.
