Man tracks down stolen pups on Craigslist

SEATTLE -- A local pet owner is trying to track down his stolen puppies by doing some detective work of his own on the Internet.

Randall Tonabi said last weekend a burglar stole two of his puppies, both a unique mix of chihuahua and dachshund.

"I don't know how anybody can steal someone else's dog, you know. It doesn't get any lower than that," he said.

The burglar also took a TV, a laptop, credit cards and guitars. Never mind the stolen items, Tonabi was determined to get his puppies back. So he logged on to Craigslist.

Tonabi posted a lost pet ad on the Web site, but also began reviewing every Seattle area listing with puppies for sale. Then one day he found a picture of his lost dog.

He found one of his puppies on a posting from a lady who wanted to find a portable dog carrier for it. Tonabi said he is sure the puppy is his because of its unique mix.

"That's my puppy. There's not too many dogs around like that," he said.

Tonabi questioned the current owner, who said the dog was a gift from her boyfriend.

Tonabi received another e-mail from another Craigslist user who told him his other puppy was being sold in Ballard.

"And she also told me that some of the items I reported stolen, he was also trying to sell," he said.

Tonabi has turned over the information to police, and hopes they'll take the next step.

"It gave me a feeling of empowerment to find it on the Internet," he said.
