2 killed in Kitsap County highway crash
BREMERTON, Wash. - Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a head-on crash along a winding, two-lane stretch of the Brownsville Highway.
A 2002 Volvo sedan heading north around 9:30 near the 12300 block of Brownsville Highway NE crossed over into the southbound lanes, where it collided head-on with a 1972 Chevrolet pickup truck.
The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, said Deputy Scott Wilson of the Kitsap County Sheriff's Department. No one else was in the vehicles.
Wilson says it's possible icy roads might have been a factor, but their investigation is still ongoing.
The Kitsap County Coroner identified the driver of the Volvo as Troy Mark Thoman, 25, of Silverdale. The driver of the pickup was identified as Charles Steve Cockerham, 47, of Poulsbo.
Wilson said investigating officials will look into a number of factors, including vehicle speeds, seat belt usage, truck cargo load shifting, and road conditions.
He said it is unknown, as this point, whether or not alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.
Anyone who may have information about the collision is asked to contact Deputy Dave Green of the Kitsap County sheriff's traffic unit at (360) 337-4634.
