SEATTLE -- The year 2009 rang in a list of new laws that could have you making more money, saving money and cutting down on calories.

If you make minimum wage you just got a raise. The base pay rate for Washington state has jumped 48 cents to $8.55 an hour, which ranks Washington as the state with the highest minimum wage in the country.

Also in 2009, all convicted drunk drivers will be required to install an ignition interlock device in their cars.

"When you get into that car you have to blow into a device that determines whether or not you've been drinking," said Capt. Jeff DeVere of Washington State Patrol.

Under the old law, anyone caught drinking and driving could have lost their license for up to four years.

The new law lets DUI suspects keep their license, but requires them to install the interlock device on their car to make sure their alcohol level is below the legal limit whenever they're behind the wheel.

Another new law might have you thinking twice before you bite into that juicy bacon cheese burger.

King County chain restaurants are now required to post nutritional information. As a result, more than 1,500 restaurants have updated their menus.

And get ready for some sticker shock the next time you head out for a meal. Take the ultimate bacon cheeseburger meal from Jack in the Box, for instance. The meal contains nearly 1,500 calories.

"It made me rethink the fast food," said Sarah Cash, a fast food customer who ultimately stuck to her guns.

"It did not change my order today," Cash said. "It made me think about it, definitely."

And this law could save you some money and help the environment. More than 200 sites are being readied for the "e-cycle Washington" program.

You can drop off old TVs and computer monitors at Goodwill and Salvation Army locations for free. Organizers expect to recycle 13,000 tons of e-junk every year.
