Joe's Vault: The blizzard of 1916
By Joe Wren
Happy New Year!
With all the snow in recent weeks - and the likelihood of more this winter - I thought I'd pull out another "Time Capsule" report we did back in February of 1988. We'd had a snow threat and we decided to do this story on the Blizzard of 1916. It's considered our second greatest snowstorm, topped only by the "Big Snow" of 1880. The 1916 snow was better documented, though, and we dipped into the Museum of History and Industry collection to illustrate our story. We also interviewed Father Frank Logan, a Seattle University institution, about his recollection of the major disaster of the 1916 snow - the collapse of the dome at St. James Cathedral. And a note to those who've been here only the last 10 or 15 years: You'll hear a reference to the Coliseum Theater. It opened in January, 1916 about a month before the storm. The beautiful terra cotta structure is still there, though now it's the home of Banana Republic. Let's hope the white stuff gives us a break for a while, though my daughter and her school-mates would vehemently disagree! |
