Repairs keep Olympia's Capital High closed
By KOMO Staff
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The bad weather is causing an extended holiday break for the 1,400 students of the Capital High School students.
The school closed its doors after its roof collapsed under the heavy snow on Christmas Day. And students are now worried the extra week off will shorten their summer vacation. On Monday the parking lot was empty of student and faculty cars but full of debris from the collapsed library roof. When the weight of the snow sent the flat roof crashing down early Christmas morning, the roof took with it the water and natural gas lines. The result was massive water damage and the danger of broken gas pipes. It's repairing those gas lines that has extended the students' break, which came in addition to the three additional snow days they had off prior to Christmas. The Olympia School District will consult the state Board of Education next week to figure out what to do about the lost days. Students fear it'll be taken out of their summer. "I like the extra week. I'm going to catch up on my sleep and stuff, but it's going to suck to make it up in the summer," said student Kelsi Stockert. But students are thankful the roof collapsed during their winter break when there were no students and teachers inside. "It's pretty cool that happened when nobody was there. I mean, if it had happened when we were there that would have been bad," said student Cameron Costa. "I think it was bound to happen," said student Viet Nguyen. "I mean a flat roof, of course, snow is going to pile on there. So it was bound to happen and luckily now one was in there." Capital High is the only school affected; all other Olympia schools were back in session as usual on Monday. District administrators are looking at possible temporary locations just in case the school's repairs aren't finished by the end of the week. |
