CHETWYND, British Columbia (AP) - Avalanches have struck British Columbia mountain country again, reportedly leaving one snowmobiler dead and another missing in separate snowslides.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Chetwynd, northeast of Prince George, B.C., say a group of 14 snowmobilers was hit by an avalanche in a remote area shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.
Const. Craig Douglass says three riders were covered by snow. Two were freed apparently without injury, but the third person dug out is believed to be dead.
Douglass says the remaining snowmobilers had to leave the victim behind.
Attempts to retrieve the body won't resume until Monday morning at the earliest.
About an hour before that avalanche, another rumbled down Mara Mountain near Enderby in the province's interior, leaving one of three snowmobilers missing.
Police say searchers scoured the area for several hours but suspended their efforts as night fell.
Police did not immediately release any details about the victims or survivors in either avalanche.
Before Sunday's incidents, at least 11 people had been killed in avalanches in the B.C. backcountry in the past several weeks.
