The Schrammie: An empty apology

They came to apologize.

That's a good thing, because "flood" should mean having to say you're sorry.

So, would the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers snap off a quick salute and come on down?

The Corps did a quick-step march to the town of Pacific to admit it goofed by releasing water from the Mud Mountain Dam, which in turn flooded over a hundred homes that otherwise would have been left high and dry.

Saying it had no clue that sections of the town would end up under water, Corps officials also say they don't remember a phone call that alerted them to the fact that opening the dam was wreaking havoc on dozens and dozens of Pacific families.

Aside from the profuse apology, the Corps didn't have much more to offer Pacific's water-logged residents.

So, for turning the town into some kind of estuary; for creating a spongy mess out of people's homes and lives, and for giving people even more reason to shiver when they hear the words, "We're from the government and we're here to help you," take a bow Army Corps of Engineers, because this "Schrammie" is for you.
