GRAHAM, Wash. -- A 27-year-old Graham-Kapowsin High School teacher has been arrested amid allegations he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.

Pierce County Sheriff's deputies arrested Scott Milliman on Friday for investigation of three counts of sexual misconduct, said Pierce County sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer.

Troyer said detectives believe the teacher began grooming the girl when she was a sophomore, and that Milliman knew the student through school as well as the church they both attended.

School officials found out about the alleged relationship on Jan. 8 through a tip. They had the teacher removed from the campus, then called police, Troyer said.

Detectives believe the teacher and student had sex at his apartment and at a hotel room.

"Well, it upsets parents, rightfully so. You send your kids to school and you expect them to be safe," Troyer said. "And when this happens, we're really lucky with the school that when this happens, we jump on it quickly and the problem is eliminated."

Milliman was booked into the Pierce County Jail Friday, but was released on bail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Pierce County Superior Court.
