Driving pet peeves: Merging, make-up and more
Our series on driving pet peeves continues, and so does the venting!
"What really makes me mad is when you put on your blinker to change lanes, and somebody speeds up so you can't," a peeved driver told us.
There is a way you could let them know how you feel. Take a look down at that button in the center of your steering wheel.
"Every motor vehicle operated upon a highway shall be equipped with a horn in good working order," says Sergeant Freddy Williams with the Washington State Patrol.
State law is fairly vague when it comes to how to use your horn. It states you only honk to give "audible warning."
"You want to just get their attention," Williams advises.
The Sergeant was a big fan of the idea of "horn etiquette." In other words, alerting the driver ahead that the light is green, and has been for five seconds, just tap a couple of times on the horn.
For the driver about to back into you? One long BEEP should do it. Just keep in mind that there's no law about this one, so beep unto others as you'd have others beep unto you.
So, anything else you dislike about other drivers?
"People trying to apply make-up while they're driving," Allison told KOMO.
We briefly mentioned "driving while distracted" before, which is basically you causing an accident while using your phone or other electronic device, smoking, eating, drinking, reading, writing, grooming, dealing with kids or pets... and the list goes on.
Can't troopers doing anything about this before the driver just mentioned causes an accident?
"As long as they're driving down the road straight, and they're going the speed limit, there's not a whole lot I can do," Williams says.
How about another pet peeve when it comes to other drivers?
"When you're merging on the freeway," Dave begins. "That big white line that's illegal to cross, and people jump across it anyway."
This one really gets some of you.
"In fact, I won't let them in," Gary says.
In writing a series like this, we do realize that some of you are saints out there.
"Pretty much, I really try to obey the law," Donna says.
Feeling a little non-saintly? Coming up in part five on Friday, we'll give you a chance to visit the roadside confessional, and we'll reveal the biggest driving pet peeves you selected in our survey.
