BELLEVUE, Wash. -- An 80-year-old woman has died from burns and smoke inhalation injuries after an early morning fire at her condo in Bellevue.
Lt. Eric Keenan says firefighters responding to an automatic alarm about 2:30 a.m. Friday found the woman unconscious near the door of the smoke-filled condo where she lived alone.
She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she later died.
Investigators believe the fire began in the woman's condo when a heating pad or massage device sparked a fire on a recliner chair in the living room.
Investigators presume that the woman was in bed in a separate room when the fire started. It appears she was trying to escape before she was overcome by the smoke and heat.
Residents in the other 35 units at the Hidden Creek Condominiums, in the 12700 block of NE 8th Street, rushed outside as the hallways filled with smoke, but no one else was injured.
Fire investigators reported that there were no working smoke detectors within the woman's condo unit. There was evidence that smoke detectors were once installed but had been removed, leaving mounting screws on the wall.
One smoke detector in the unit was found on a desk with a battery in it, but the detector did not work because the battery was inserted backwards. Another detector was lacking a battery altogether.
Firefighters were alerted to the fire after smoke from the fire made it into the common hallway of the three-story complex and activated the automatic alarm system.
The fire was quickly extinguished and fire crews said the building's other residents were allowed to go back inside after firefighters checked to make sure the flames had not spread.
The name of the woman who was killed has not been released.
