SEATTLE - Nine cars were damaged as flames and heat from a burning car ignited other vehicles around it Sunday afternoon in a parking garage near the Seattle waterfront.

Firefighters were called to the scene, at 2323 Elliott Ave., at about 1:45 p.m., where they found clouds of smoke billowing from the third floor garage of the Art Institute.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but access to the area was blocked off to allow an investigation to proceed.

A battalion chief at the scene told KOMO News that one car caught fire for unknown reasons, igniting eight other vehicles that were parked around it. None of the eight sustained serious damage.

The driver of the first car said he was inside at the time, but got out and was not injured.
