Wallingford: We might need more porta-potties

SEATTLE -- The Fourth of July is only a month away. Now that the Jul-Ivars fireworks celebration is a no-go at Myrtle Edwards Park, neighbors near the only show in Seattle are bracing for huge crowds.

An additional 15,000 people could join the crowd that gathers at Gas Works Park On July 4th.

"It'll just mean more people walking up and down the sidewalk, said Wallingford resident Rebecca Brenneman.

And more people packing Wallingford means...

"We're going to need porta potties very badly," said Kara Ceriello, president of the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce.

She now heads up the hunt for Honey Bucket sponsors.

" 'Relief brought to you by Murphy's Pub' -- that sort of thing," she said.

One person with Honey Bucket said he delivers plenty of portable potties to the park -- about 300 units.

But with police predicting an additional 15,000 at Gas Works this year -- and some figure it could be even more -- officers might stop letting people in before the fireworks begin. They're still trying to figure out how many the park can safely hold.

The plan is to funnel the overflow onto Wallingford Avenue.

"(But) if they close the park and won't let people in to use the porta potties at the entrance, that'll be a problem," Ceriello said.

So some suggestions to handle the potty and parking problems: Find an alternative viewing area or venue, arrive early, and make sure you go before you go.
