MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. -- A firefighter and resident were injured Monday morning when a fire broke out in a two-story home, destroying a deck and causing serious damage to the home.

The fire apparently began on a back deck just after 7 a.m. in the 21800 block of SE 236th Place in Maple Valley.

"When crews arrived, fire was extending through the roof up the back from the porch, so it was a fairly large fire," said deputy fire chief Larry Rude.

Fire officials say one person in the home suffered burns to his hand and stomach while trying to put out the fire, while a firefighter was injured when wet drywall from the roof collapsed on him as he was going down the stairs. They were both taken to a local hospital but neither's injuries was considered life threatening.

Investigators believe a barbecue on the back deck was the source of the fire.
