DNA helps crack 6-year-old rape case
Dennis Wiseman By KOMO Staff
LYNNWOOD, Wash. -- A 40-year-old man was arrested Tuesday for the rape of a 13-year-old Lynnwood girl in 2002, and investigators credit a DNA sample for helping solve the six-year old case.
The attack happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 22, 2002 at the girl's apartment in the 500 block of 164th Street SW. Police say the man got into the apartment somehow and went into the girl's bedroom, where she just happened to have two other 13-year-old girlfriends staying the night. The man raped the girl who lived there, but left the other two girls alone, who ended up sleeping through the entire ordeal. Police say the man threatened to shoot everyone in the apartment if she didn't comply with his attack. Detectives don't know how or why he chose this girl, and at the time there were no leads and the case went cold. But the break came recently, when detectives got word of a DNA match that led them to Dennis Wiseman. He was arrested at his apartment without incident, and detectives say it's the same apartment he lived in at the time of the rape, and it's not too far from the victim's apartment. He's now in the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first degree rape and burglary. Police say the suspect's criminal history includes prior burglary convictions but no sex crimes that detectives are aware of. |
