Woman shot in chest in front of daughters
MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- Sheriff's deputies here have arrested a 70-year-old man suspected of shooting his girlfriend multiple times in front of her daughters.
Investigators said the two had been involved in some sort of domestic dispute and the man was in the process of moving out of the house.
The man returned to the home in the 4400 block of 128th Place Northeast just after noon on Wednesday and shot the woman multiple times with a revolver.
"For some reason that we're still trying to figure out, he walked into the living room and shot her in front of everyone -- her daughters and the visiting couple," said Snohomish County sheriff's spokesperson Rebecca Hover.
The 63-year-old woman was hit in the chest and arm. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday afternoon. She was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit.
Officials said five people - the woman's three daughters and two family friends - were inside the home and witnessed the shooting.
The gunman drove off, but deputies caught up to him within the hour. He was arrested near the small town of Oso along Highway 530, between Arlington and Darrington.
Police have cordoned off the area around the home where the woman was shot while they collect evidence and interview witnesses.
Detectives said the couple did not have a history of problems, and those close to the shooting suspect described the man as mild-mannered.
"I thought he was a pretty normal guy, an older fella," said family friend Ryan Killian.
