OLYMPIA - The man accused of raping an 11-year-old girl did not appear in court for his probable cause hearing on Wednesday as was scheduled. Officials said David Lynch was out of control and irrational, so he could not be physically moved from in Thurston County Jail for his court appearance.

"Mr. Lynch is not in the mental or physical shape to appear in court. He's exhibiting irrational behavior," said prosecuting attorney John Skinder.

Officials said Lynch's legs and arms were put in restraints.

Lynch is being held on three counts of child rape charges, as well as assault and burglary charges. His court appearance has been delayed until Thursday morning, but his defense attorney said he isn't sure whether Lynch will be fit by then.

Prosecutors read from a journal they say Lynch wrote.

"In reading parts of the journal, there were comments about his need to get over his 'child-hunting' game and there was comment 'that raping my teacher was a possibility," Skinder said.

Investigators said it was just after midnight on Monday when a man armed with a knife entered through an unlocked door at a home in southeastern Olympia and raped an 11-year-old girl who had been sleeping in her bedroom.

The victim told police she woke up and thought she was tangled in bed sheets. As she reached to untangle herself, she realized someone had their hand across her throat and was strangling her, court documents stated.

After the alleged rape, the suspect left, threatening to hurt the girl if she told anyone. The victim's mother called 911 and officers searched the area with police dogs, but could not locate the attacker.

Less than 24 hours later, a police officer patrolling the area near the victim's home spotted a man who matched the description of the rapist.

When the patrol car passed by, the man ducked down and tried to hide his identity from officers. That made them suspicious, so officers interviewed him, and detectives arrested him for investigation of rape.

Olympia Police Commander Tor Bjornstad said 23-year-old David Lukas Lynch claimed to be a transient living in the woods. Police searched the woods and then found an elaborate underground bunker they believe the man slept in about 1/2 mile from the home where the attack occurred.

The box was about 4 feet high, 4 feet wide, and about 12 feet long. There was a wood stove and several books. But police found other items that made them suspicious.

"We found a knife that we believe meets the general description of the one described by the victim the night of the attack," said Det. Lt. Steve Oderman with the Olympia Police Department. "And we found general paperwork linking the suspect to the bunker inside.

Lynch was booked into the Thurston County Jail and detectives planned to take DNA samples.
