SNOHOMISH, Wash. -- A search is under way for a pilot who took off from Harvey Field in Snohomish but did not return as scheduled.

The family of Gordon Last said the 51-year-old pilot left Saturday afternoon and hasn't been seen since. His car is still parked at the aircraft hangar.

Eight planes spent Monday searching a 50 mile radius around the airport.

Last loves flying. He took after his dad and his uncle -- it was their life's passion. And, when he left Saturday afternoon, he told his girlfriend he'd be home in time for a special dinner. A half hour after he was supposed to be home, Delvia Abila headed to Harvey Field.

"Actually, the longer we wait the harder it's getting but have to stay strong," she said.

Last's family said he was flying a red and white 1946 single-engine Taylorcraft.

State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Nisha Marvel said Last did not file a flight plan and his plane does not have an emergency locator or transponder.

"That poses some additional challenges for searchers," she said. "We're flying in areas of Snohomish County based on the pilot's history of flying in that area."
