Is it the mark of a macho man?
Will it inspire young athletes to also bathe themselves in blood?
As we ponder those questions, I'd like to ask Owen Schmitt to put a band-aid on his boo-boo and come on down.
Schmitt is a fullback for the Seattle Seahawks.
In Sunday's game against Jacksonville, Schmitt thought it would be inspirational to use his helmet as a head-banging example of how amped up he was for the game.
With enthusiasm streaming down his face from the gash he opened up on his head, Schmitt was rushed to the sideline during the national anthem so he could be patched up.
I'm betting that every teenaged football player watching was mesmerized by the bloody picture of Owen Schmitt's self-induced commitment to the game.
In the immortal words of Forrest Gump: Stupid is as stupid does.
So for his inspirational example to all the kids who put football pads on; for his tireless efforts to teach all the masochistic tricks of the gridiron trade and above all, for serving as a role model for all those seeking the glory of being a football hero, take a bow Owen Schmitt, because this "Schrammie" is for you.
