SPANAWAY - If you heard screams for help, would you call police?
Pierce County investigators say at least two people ignored a woman's cries for help, and now she's dead.
One of those people was her boyfriend.
William Hart is now charged with manslaughter, accused of leaving his girlfriend Annette McGrath to die. Hart told police he and McGrath got into a shoving match at their Spanaway home Friday night.
It spilled outside, where Hart told police he pushed McGrath so hard, she fell back and hit her head on the garage.
According to court papers, he heard a "horrible noise" when her head hit, and she fell to the ground.
That's when Hart told police he went to the grocery to buy alcohol and his next day's lunch. Then he says he went to his father's house and watched TV.
Later in the night, Hart says he went back home and saw McGrath still lying in the bushes but went inside and trashed the kitchen, breaking dishes.
A neighbor heard all the commotion, but didn't call police.
Even at 4 a.m. Saturday morning, hearing McGrath's cries for help, the neighbor didn't call 911.
A different neighbor, Velma Forrister, says she didn't hear any of that screaming, but her dog was frantic.
"Friday night, it was 'woof woof woof,'" she says. "Copper was running back and forth, and we thought it was a cat or an opossum."
That whole time, McGrath was lying helpless.
Police say her boyfriend came home again Saturday morning, saw she hadn't moved - and he went to work.
When he came home Saturday night, more than 18 hours after their fight, police say he finally called them. But by then, McGrath was already dead.
"It's pretty cold on his part," says Pierce County Detective Ed Troyer. "He left her there all night long knowing she was in bushes. If we would've got a call earlier in the evening, we probably would've had a different outcome."
The autopsy report shows McGrath suffered "moderate head trauma" from hitting the garage.
It wasn't enough to kill her.
The Medical Examiner's preliminary report is that she died of hypothermia from being outside for so long.
