FORT LEWIS, Wash. -- A solider from California became the 18th soldier from the 5th Stryker Brigade to die in battle since the unit deployed to Afghanistan in July.

Spec. Kyle Coumas of Lockeford, Calif., died Wednesday when his vehicle was hit with an improvised bomb in the country's Kandahar Province. It was Coumas' first deployment.

Coumas joined the Army in February, 2007 and was assigned to the Stryker Brigade at Fort Lewis four months later.
