Keep active! That's Barney Barnhart's advice to seniors. The 81-year-old man from Granite Falls is staying active by patrolling his neighborhood.
In 1993, Barney founded Granite Falls' Citizen's Patrol. Barney and the two other volunteers don't get paid.
They're not in it for the money. They just want to keep their community safe.
"We take papers to courts. I take evidence to state patrol," says Barney. If he witnesses a crime, he'll call it in.
Granite Falls Police Chief Tony Domish couldn't be more impressed with Barnhart's work ethic.
"Barney's one of the most dependable people I've ever met," Domish said. "You can count on him and ask him to do anything, and he'll do it."
Barney's a decorated veteran who served 20 years in the Navy. He was a specialist in underwater explosives in World War II.
That's in the past. What Barney Barnhart is concerned about is the present -- keeping his community safe.
Even today, when he's battling cirrhosis of the liver, and shingles, he never misses a day. Maybe it's because: "I don't like to be a couch potato," says Barnhart.
Lucky for the people in Granite Falls.
