For 32-year-old Kris Johnson, a spare $2 just turned into a big pile of cash.
After being laid off more than a year ago when the company he worked for was purchased and shut down, Johnson was still looking for regular work.
"Having a real hard time finding a job, having to juggle money around to make room to buy a turkey," he said.
On Friday evening he was on the way to his graparents' house and decided to buy a Lotto ticket.
"I'm a sporadic ticket buyer," Johnson said. "I had an extra couple bucks and had the old saying going through my head, 'you don't play, you don't win.'"
That play just netted him a $6.5 million jackpot.
"I'm not quite sure how to feel. Still kind of in shock," he said on Monday.
Johnson said his girlfriend realized he won as they were putting their three kids to bed on Sunday evening.
"You daydream about this all the time. Then it happened," he said.
He said his kids, ages 7, 8 and 12, don't know yet that he won the lottery.
Johnson was scheduled to start working at a new temporary job next week, but says he won't be making it in.
"I think I should call them up today," he said with a laugh.
Johnson said he plans to use some of the money to help his grandparents fix up their house, and he's considering going back to school.
"I'm just going to try to not go too crazy," he said of his spending plans. "Take it easy, make it last."
