PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -- One person was killed and two others injured in a multi-car crash in the Midland area on Wednesday night.

Pierce County sheriff's Office said excessive speed combined with failure to obey a traffic light led to the deadly accident at 97th Street East and Portland Avenue East around 9 p.m.

An SUV carrying up to eight people ran through a stop light and collided into another car. The impact caused the SUV to spin up in the air and slam down on an Audi.

"He came flying down this road nailed the red car, flipped up over the red car and then landed on her," said witness Jake Schley.

One person inside the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim has not been identified.

And two others - a passenger of the SUV and the driver of the Audi - were injured. The extent of their injuries were not known.

The remaining passengers of the SUV ran off on foot, detectives said.

Deputies have caught up with one of the passengers, and are still searching for several others. The driver of the SUV remains at large, and a description was not available.

No other details were immediately available, and the investigation is ongoing.
