EATONVILLE, Wash. -- Two people were killed late Wednesday morning when a minivan they were in collided with a logging truck.

The Washington State Patrol says the minivan ran a stop sign while traveling 55 mph at the intersection of SR-7 at the Eatonville cutoff just before noon. The van smashed into the log truck, causing the truck and its 100,000-pound load to roll over the Ford Windstar minivan.

Troopers said the truck dragged the minivan at least 70 feet, killing both people inside and spilling the load of logs all over the road. The van and the truck came to a stop on the right shoulder in a mangled mess with the truck rolled on its side.

Joseph Fortune, 80, of Olympia was driving the van at the time with his 77-year-old wife Helen on board. The couple died in the crash.

"To tell you the truth, I probably don't even think they knew what hit them," said Trooper Mark Lewis."It happened that fast."

The driver of the truck, 49-year-old Randy L. Fisk, of Mineral, was not hurt. The log truck belongs to T. L. Fitzer Hauling Inc.

A 16-year-old witness at the scene said there was nothing the truck driver could do.

"The truck driver did all could, and he T-boned him and drug them down the road," Shane Buskeness said. "The truck driver did all he could to stop but, you know, did all he could."

State Route 7 was shut down for several hours while troopers investigated the collision.
