Seattle corner sees 2 serious crashes in as many days
SEATTLE -- Just one day after a woman was struck and killed on a South Seattle street, another woman was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash on Wednesday night.

Police said a woman was walking near the intersection of Rainier Avenue South and South Andover Street when a Toyota Corolla drove up onto the sidewalk and struck her around 7:01 p.m.

The woman was transported to Harborview Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Corolla sped off from the scene, but officers caught up with him just blocks away at 20th Avenue South and South Jackson Street.

Police detected signs of impairment on the driver, and took him to Harborview Medical Center for a blood draw. The driver is being investigated for vehicular homicide and driving under the influence.

Just 24 hours prior to the hit-and-run accident a woman was fatally struck by a milk truck near the same intersection.

Police said the 78-year-old woman was on foot when she was struck by a truck around 6:30 p.m. The unidentified woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver told police he was headed turning right from Andover into the northbound lanes of Rainier when he struck the pedestrian.

The cause of the crash has not been determined; however, police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role.
