Icy roads blamed for fatal crash, rash of accidents
Icy roads and slick driving conditions were a factor in several crashes overnight and Saturday morning, including a Friday night collision in Seattle that claimed the life of an elderly woman.

The deadly collision, in the 2800 block of S. Orcas Street, also injured four others in two vehicles.

Troopers were called to the scene of that crash at about 10:50 p.m., where they found that a Suzuki and Toyota had collided in the middle of the block after one of the vehicles slid on the ice and crossed the centerline.

An elderly woman in the Suzuki was seriously injured and unresponsive when medics arrived. She was rushed to Harborview Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

An ambulance also took three occupants from the Toyota and the driver of the Suzuki for minor injuries. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, police said.

Several other icy road crashes also were reported overnight as the temperature dropped below freezing in most parts of the Puget Sound. Among them:

• A single car crashed on southbound Interstate 5 at Duwamish after sliding on the ice. There was no word on injuries.

• A two-car crash on the 16th Avenue Bridge led to the closure of the bridge because it was iced over. There was no word on injuries in that crash.

• An SUV rolled onto its top on I-5 at 195th Street in Shoreline. There were minor injuries in the crash.

• Highway 202 was closed at NE 124th Street just east of Redmond at about 8:30 a.m. Saturday because of ice on the roadway and several collisions. The roadway has been cleared and all lanes are now open.
