A cold weather system descending toward Western Washington from the Yukon prompted officials to issue warnings and to open special shelters across the region.

The weather pattern will bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far, forecasters say, and is expected to stick around for a few days.

Nighttime lows could drop into the 20s and teens in some areas, prompting emergency organizations to open cold weather shelters and transportation officials to warn of dangerous, icy road conditions.

Homeowners also were warned to take such basic precautions as wrapping outdoor pipes, and motorists were advised to check the antifreeze in their vehicles.

The National Weather Service says a modified Arctic cold front will move through the area from the north Saturday night, bringing windy conditions and even colder temperatures to all of Western Washington.

Very windy conditions are likely to develop over western Whatcom County and the San Juan Islands - locations that are closest to Arctic outflow through the Fraser River Valley.

Forecasters say there is a chance of snow showers with the front Saturday evening, but moisture is limited and no significant accumulations are likely.

The only exception is along the north shore of the Olympic Peninsula - in places like Port Angeles and Sequim - where up to 2 inches of snow could fall Saturday night through early Sunday as upflow winds push against the mountains.

Cold and windy conditions will continue across the region on Sunday, forecasters say. Temperatures across many areas of Western Washington will struggle to move much above freezing.

As winds gradually die down later Sunday night into Monday, nighttime lows could drop down into the teens to lower
20s, and high temperatures may only reach into the low 30s.

Temperatures are expected to slowly moderate around the middle of next week.
