A group of officers gathers Sunday at the site where four Lakewood police were shot dead a week ago.
PARKLAND, Wash. - Exactly one week ago on Sunday, four Lakewood police officers were sitting inside a coffee shop when a man walked in and gunned them down in cold blood.

Four rings outside the Forza Coffee Co. shop in Parkland marked the exact moment of the shooting a week ago, as a large group of police, firefighters and citizens gathered to honor those fallen heroes.

The Patriot Guard Riders, a group that escorts the remains of fallen soldiers, was there, too, and performed a bikers' salute.

Just down the road from the shooting, members of the Lakeview Church of Christ sang and prayed for the families left behind.

Understanding why is especially difficult for this congregation. Their minister, the Rev. Glenn Newton, said hello to the officers every week - inside the coffee shop.

"Every Sunday morning I'd stop in there to get my coffee," he remembers. "The only reason I didn't stop this past week is because we had a guest speaker I had to go pick up at his hotel, and I was running a little late."

"It hurts - a lot, so ..." His voice trails off.

Monica Moore brought her daughter to the Lakewood Police Department to see the thousands of balloons and flowers left there.

Meanwhile, King County Deputy Beth Lavin just got off work. "I was standing guard at the funeral home," she explains.

She left a heartfelt message for her fellow officers.

"It's been a very difficult time for all of us in law enforcement," she says.

Everything at the outdoor memorial will be removed after Tuesday's service to remember the slain officers - but it won't be forgotten.

All of the patches, hats, T-shirts and flags will go somewhere in the county, and the stuffed animals will go to children for Christmas.

Little Carly, who was there on Sunday, hopes she gets one. She may be too young too understand what it means, but she does know where the four officers officers are right now.

"In Heaven - with angels," she says.
