Cop killer's sister ordered held on $1.5 million bail
TACOMA -- The sister of cop killer Maurice Clemmons was ordered held on $1.5 million bail by a Pierce County Superior court judge Monday.
Latanya Clemmons is suspected of helping to hide the alleged get-away driver Darcus Allen after the shootings last week that killed four Lakewood police officers.
She is among seven people, mostly family members of Clemmons, who are in jail accused of helping her brother Maurice stay out of police's hands after the shooting.
Police say Allen abandoned the pickup truck used to pick up Clemmons after the shooting, and took off in one direction while Clemmons took off in another.
Prosecutors allege that Latanya Clemmons helped Allen hide out while police were searching for him and for Clemmons. They say she continues to be uncooperative, and that's why the prosecutor asked for and received the high bail of $1.5 million.
"I can't get into too many details about how she was helping Darcus Allen," Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said. "But she was helping Darcus Allen evade capture at a time when police were looking to speak with him."
Even though Latanya Clemmons is being held on high bail, she hasn't yet been charged. She's due back in court on Wednesday with possible charges of rendering criminal assistance.
Allen also has not been charged. He's being held without bail on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas where he and Clemmons were in prison together.
If Allen waves extradition, Lindquist says he's ready to proceed with other measures to keep Allen in the Pierce County jail. And depending on how much police determine he helped Clemmons, he could be charged with murder.
