MILL CREEK, Wash. - A fleeing suspect was shot at by police but was not hit during a miles-long chase that ended on Interstate 5 late Friday.

The incident began just before 11 p.m. when a Mill Creek police officer tried to pull over a Toyota SUV for a traffic violation on Highway 527 in Mill Creek, said Sgt. Robert Goetz of the Everett police.

But the driver of the Toyota would not stop; instead he took off south on the highway with the officer in pursuit, then turned and headed north on Interstate 405.

Two other Mill Creek officers joined the chase as well as a Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputy as the suspect turned and headed north on Interstate 5.

Just north of 164th Street interchange, the deputy managed to stop the fleeing Toyota using a PIT maneuver, Goetz said.

One of the Mill Creek officers fired his gun, but the 52-year-old suspect was not struck by any bullets.

The man fought with police as they placed him under arrest, and he sustained minor injuries in the struggle. He was taken to an Everett hospital for treatment.

The suspect is expected to be booked into the Snohomish County Jail after he is released from the hospital. There were no other occupants in the suspect’s vehicle.

The Mill Creek officer who fired the shots is 40 years old and has been with the department for 4 1/2 years. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is routine procedure in these types of incidents, Goetz said.
