BELLEVUE - It's an award-winning documentary that's giving hope to local families.

"Darius Goes West" focuses on a teenager who has the most aggressive form of muscular dystrophy. It's called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Mindy Leffler hopes after you watch the documentary, it will inspire you to help, and to give.

Her 3-year-old son Aidan has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy "but he doesn't know it," says Mindy. Proceeds from the documentary, which is showing Wednesday night June 27th at Bellevue's Meydenbauer Center, will go to Charley's fund (www.charleysfund.org).

Charley's Fund is a foundation that invests in scientific research. Mindy believes it's her best hope for a breakthrough.

"Some kind of breakthrough in the next 10 years. I believe that it will," says Mindy.

Mindy knows everything about DMD.

"The progress of the disease is that you use a wheelchair between six and eight years old and they gradually become quadriplegic losing the use of their upper bodies when they're in their teens, mid teens, and most of them die from heart or respiratory failure," says Mindy.

She's watched the documentary and she says it provides hope for families dealing with the illness

"The challenge is to find anything that will slow it down," says Mindy.
