Carjacker flees on I-5, plows through fence of Army base
LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- A man suspected of leading police on a chase up and down Interstate 5 before crashing through a fence at Joint Base Lewis-McChord late Monday afternoon was arrested late Monday night.
Shawn M. Marwood, 33, was booked into jail for investigation of assault, theft, vehicular assault, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
Police spokesperson Heidi Hoffman said a sergeant spotted a driver speeding faster than 100 mph in the southbound shoulder of Interstate 5 near the Dupont exit. The sergeant followed the driver of the '93 Acura Legend, who took the Dupont off-ramp and crashed into a swinging arm at a railroad crossing.
The sergeant drew his weapon and attempted to approach the man, but the man yelled, "Don't shoot me!" and sped off, Hoffman said.
The driver of the Acura got onto I-5 again, this time heading the wrong way in the northbound lanes until he crashed. The man abandoned the Acura and carjacked a minivan from a family while on the interstate, Hoffman said.
The man used this minivan to crash through a fence surrounding Joint Base Lewis-McChord, according to police.
The minivan was found abandoned on the base near the Discovery Village housing area, but the driver was nowhere to be found. Officers, with the help of K-9 units, combed the area.
Marwood has several previous arrests, including for theft, possession of stolen property, attempting to elude, driving under the influence, and reckless driving.
