PUYALLUP, Wash. -- A Pierce County sheriff's deputy shot at a man who allegedly crashed a pickup truck into a patrol car early Wednesday after a chase.

Officials said the incident began about 3:50 a.m. when deputies spotted the stolen truck and chased the vehicle down 116th East.

The fleeing driver crashed into a stump at the end of a dead-end road, but refused to get out of the vehicle.

Sgt. Jerry Bates said deputies had their guns drawn when the man threw the truck into reverse and rammed one of the patrol cars, knocking down a deputy.

The other deputy shot the driver once, but it was not clear where the man was hit.

Despite being shot, the man was able to run off but was quickly chased down by a police dog.

The 22-year-old man is being treated for the gun shot wound and dog bites at a hospital and was expected to be booked into the Pierce County Jail.

None of the deputies was injured.
