KING COUNTY -- One person was killed when a motorcycle crashed on Interstate 405 near NE 100th Street on Friday, according to Washington State Patrol.

Trooper Jeff Merrill said the motorcycle was travelling at a high rate of speed when it attempted to switch over to the right lane. The driver then lost control and the bike slid into a guard rail around 7:45 p.m.

A female passenger, 19-year-old Chantel N. Still of Kirkland suffered major head injuries. She died at the scene.

The driver, 24-year-old Nicholas J. Frye of Redmond, suffered minor injuries. He is in stable condition.

Troopers said 911 callers reported having seen a reckless motorcyclist on the interstate just minutes before the accident.

Merrill said both the driver and the passenger were wearing a helmet. He said alcohol and drugs did not play a role in the crash.

The driver is under investigation for vehicular homicide, Merrill said.

Two right lanes of I-405 were shut down several hours following the accident.
