FORT LEWIS, Wash. -- Four Stryker Soldiers were remembered here on Friday for their dedication, professionalism and how they worked as an intimate team to carry out their mission.

Staff Sgt. Jacob M. Thompson, Sgt. Nicholas A. Gummersall, Cpl. Kareem R. Khan, and Cpl. Juan M. Alcantara were killed August 6 while clearing a house in Baquba, Iraq.

An improvised explosive device took these men from their families and friends.

All four had graduated from advanced schools and were riflemen among other individual talents.

"Each was part of what we call a new generation of soldiers, " said Major Kyle Marsh at the ceremony. "Words, such as 'adaptable, flexible, agile, mentally tough, dedicated' are but a few comments of what we've heard describe what we refer to as a Stryker soldier."

Just hours before they were killed, the four men had enjoyed the brighter side of their mission -- helping the Iraqi people, trying to get food and water to the women and children.

"How quickly we ask our fighting men to change their posture and perform contrasting duties, as later in the day they went to clear houses," said Capt. Dan Johnson.

"You are better off in my view, spending a lifetime remembering these soldiers, as the larger than life figures that they were. Each, in their own way helpful, compassionate and resolved in the execution of their duties."

The four killed soldiers were with the 3rd Stryker brigade. The company deployed to Iraq about 15 months ago.
