1 hospitalized in chain-reaction pileup on I-5
TACOMA, Wash. - One person is hospitalized and another is facing a possible vehicular assault charge following a four-car chain-reaction pileup early Sunday morning on Interstate 5.
State troopers responded to the scene, on I-5 near the 72nd Street exit in Tacoma, at about 1:25 a.m.
An investigation found that three cars were headed south in the same lane of I-5 as they approached a construction zone.
Two of the cars slowed and stopped for traffic backed up at the construction site, but the third car - a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo driven by a 22-year-old Lakewood man - just kept going.
The Isuzu slammed into the second car, which in turn struck the first car. The impact pushed the first car into another lane, where it struck a fourth car.
The driver of the second car, a 51-year-old Tacoma woman, was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
None of the occupants in the other vehicles were hurt - including the driver of the Isuzu.
The Washington State Patrol says high speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, and the driver of the Isuzu faces possible vehicular assault charges.
