Investigators are seen outside the home where the girl was killed on Sunday.
HOODSPORT, Wash. -- A man has been detained by sheriff's deputies here after his 5-year-old daughter was murdered Sunday evening.

Mason County Sheriff Chief Deputy Dean Byrd said the girl's throat had been slashed and her body was found about 6:13 p.m. after someone in the house called 911.

Investigators are trying to determine what prompted the attack, but Byrd would not say what led deputies to arrest the girl's 29-year-old father.

The girl's mother and another child were in the home at the time of the murder but were not injured.

Byrd said the murder is one of the worst things he's encountered in his 37-year career with the department.

"This is a horrific crime," he said. "As a police officer and a representative of the department, our heart goes out to the family members that have endured this awful, horrific event."

Officers cordoned off the home in the 200 block of North Mt. Seattle Way near Lake Cushman while they collected evidence at the scene.

The name of the girl who was killed has not been released.
