SHELTON, Wash. - The driver of a backhoe was seriously hurt when the machine rolled off a bridge into a creek in rural Mason County.

Medics and deputies responded to the scene, about 10 to 12 miles west of Shelton off West Shelton Matlock Road, at about 10:05 a.m.

Mason County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dean Byrd said the driver was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious leg injuries. His condition was not available.

It was not immediately known what caused the backhoe to roll off the bridge, a rustic span with no railings.

This is a developing story. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
