Schram: What do anarchists do when not out causing chaos?
»Play Video
I’ve been wondering: What do anarchists do when they're not out practicing anarchy?
I began this mental exercise after finding out that one of the anarchists arrested in the May Day melee earlier this week works as a secretary at his daddy's Seattle law firm.
I’m left to wonder if he might be the guy pictured wearing Nike shoes as he goes about breaking windows at the Nike store on Tuesday.
My first real contact with an anarchist came during the WTO riots.
I was one of many reporters covering a news conference called by a group of black clad anarchists.
I asked one of them if being an anarchist meant having total disdain for the law.
He gave me a card with a quote that read: "Laws are spider webs for the rich, steel chains for the poor and weak, and fishing nets in the hands of our government."
Ultimately, I was told I had to leave the news conference because I was not following the rules that the anarchists had laid out.
I doubt that there are anarchists who work in law enforcement.
I can't see them punching a time clock at Boeing or hawking real estate on Mercer Island.
I honestly don't know what anarchists do when they're not practicing anarchy, but whatever it is, I suspect it's rather mundane and unfulfilling.
