An aggressive driver trying to save time on his commute received critical injuries Thursday after striking a disabled logging truck while attempting to pass traffic near Interstate 5, troopers said.

Shortly before 6:45 am this morning, a semi truck was disabled in the right lane of southbound I-5 just past State Route 518. A white Chevy SUV was preparing to merge from 518 in slow-moving traffic.

“Unaware that a semi truck was blocking the right lane ahead of the driver, a 23-year-old Tukwila man, aggressively cut across ... in an attempt to merge onto Interstate 5 before legally allowed,” Trooper Julie Startup said.

“Witnesses stated the Chevy was following a UPS truck which most likely blocked his view of the disabled semi.”
