KING COUNTY - A report late Thursday from the King County Medical Examiner now calls the death of the two UW doctors a "murder-suicide".

Police say Dr. Jian Chen fired five times, killing himself and his mentor: Dr. Roger Haggitt.

Officials said that a note found on Chen's body indicated that he was committing suicide and didn't want to hurt anyone else. It was then suggested that it was possible Haggitt died while trying to stop the suicide attempt.

But the Medical Examiner's report says that Haggitt was shot four times, suggesting murder and suicide.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon at the UW Health Sciences complex, and was first believed to have been a murder-suicide -- especially when it was learned the resident's contract was not being renewed and that he was having trouble with his boss.

Campus police initially said a man with a handgun shot and killed another doctor in a private office in the pathology section about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, and then killed himself.

UW spokesman Walter Neary identified the men as Dr. Rodger Haggitt, a professor of pathology and director of hospital pathology, and Dr. Jian Chen, a resident doctor.

Police said people outside heard voices and gunshots, and that a handgun was found at the scene. University police initially said they didn't know the exact motive, but did say that Chen had recently found out that his contract with the medical center was not going to be renewed.

University officials say other workers in the pathology department heard Chen talking of buying a gun as early as March. Chen was offered counseling and other help, but he turned everyone down.

The head of the pathology department, Dr. Nelson Fausto, says some workers were afraid and kept their doors locked when Chen was around. But Fausto says Haggitt was Chen's mentor and was never afraid.
