Teaching 'Peace Of Mind'
They aren't contributing money, helping in the recovery effort, or giving trauma counseling.
They're offering peace of mind.
At the end of this month, Pam Carlson and Jill Grossman will take their relaxation class on the road to teachers in Washington, D.C. and New York. East Coast teachers have been fielding difficult questions about death and terrorism from the students since the attacks, while dealing with their own stress.
"For people that are already under stress, something like what happened out there on September 11th, and then the anthrax scares, really put them over the edge," said Carlson.
"We can lower their threshold and add to their reserves. They'll be more relaxed, energized and nourished," added Grossman.
The women teach stress management and meditation classes though Blue Rose Wellness Services, with the goal of giving people techniques that will bring some balance to their demanding lives.
"They actually say 'OK, if I reduce the stress in my life, I can be a stability and strength to those around me', especially for teachers, who are an example and strength for their students, " said Grossman.
The women will spend a week showing East Coast teachers exercises that can prevent stress, ways to recognize stress and tools to replenish the body and mind.
"It's one of those many acts we can try to do, to help support each other," said Carlson.
