Snow Arrives In Western Washington

WESTERN WASHINGTON - You've been hearing about it for days. Now, it appears we're finally getting some snow in the Puget Sound area.

Cooler air is pouring into Western Washington, and that is now leaving the door open for snow showers.

Snow reports came in from the south and east end -- Renton, Tukwila, S. Bellevue, Issaquah Plateau, Federal Way, Kent East Hill, Tacoma, and North Bend earlier Friday afternoon. It didn't cause any problems, but is a sign of things to come.

Areas north of Seattle already had the first Friday morning. Spots north of Arlington in Skagit County got about 1-2" in a snow shower.

Periods of off and on snow showers were in the forecast for Friday night. The National Weather Service issued a Snow Advisory for areas above 300 feet (that would include the Seattle-area hilltops), which could see 1-2" of accumulations in snow showers. Below 300 feet can see snow inside heavier showers. There's also a chance of thunderstorms.

It will be a similar situation for this weekend. Saturday will see snow showers at times mixed in with sun breaks. Highs will top out in the mid 30s. Snow accumulations could reach 1-2" under a snow shower above 300 feet. Below 300 feet, it may snow at times, but little or brief accumulations expected.

We could see a bit more of a widespread snow Saturday night into Sunday morning, with light accumulations between Trace-2" 0-300 feet, and 1-3" above 300 feet.

For Sunday afternoon, it'll be cold and breezy, with a few snow showers around. Breeziest winds will be up near Bellingham at the outflow of the Frasier River Valley. Highs will range from around 30 near Bellingham to mid 30s elsewhere.

It now looks like we'll be dry with just a few flurries for Monday and Tuesday, but the early-week forecast is still in flux, as the forecast models are not in agreement with what happens next.

By the way, the cat shown in the top photo is "Spot". She belongs to our Web master Stan Orchard, who's out in Hobart. His e-mail is stano@komotv.com if you want to drop him a note about "Spot" :)

The girls in the second photo attend Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bellevue.
