GRANITE FALLS - Three teens from Granite Falls were injured but lucky to be alive after the car they were riding in collided with a dump truck-and-trailer Tuesday afternoon.
Police say the accident, which happened around 1:30 p.m., was caused when the teens' 1996 Cadillac Seville ran at a stop sign and collided with a trailer being towed by a dump truck at the intersection of South Granite and East Pioneer streets.
Police say the teens were racing another car through the city at speeds between 80 and 100 mph in a 25-mph zone. Police say the lead car pulled off to the side, but the trailing car pulled around them, raced straight through the intersection and smashed into the trailer.
Miraculously, despite the car being completely totaled, all three in the car survived. Two teenage girl passengers are in serious condition. One, a 17-year-old, is at Harborview with head injuries. The other, a 19-year-old, is at the Providence Medical Center in Everett. The driver, a 16-year-old boy, is in stable condition at Providence with no serious injuries.
The driver of the dump truck, a 29-year-old man, was treated for minor injuries and released.
Witnesses say the force of the impact lifted the trailer off the ground and created an 8-inch hole in the pavement where it landed.
Police say none of the three were wearing seat belts.
