Carlos Guillen Arrested For Investigation Of Drunken Driving
Guillen, 26, was stopped early Thursday by police in suburban Clyde Hill who said he was going 89 mph in a 60 mph zone in his 2002 Mercedes.
He refused to take a Breathalyzer test when taken to the police station, resulting in automatic suspension of his driver's license, Clyde Hill Police Chief Bill Archer said.
"This is a very serious matter, and we're taking it very seriously," Seattle Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale told KOMO 4 News.
Guillen was with the team on a flight to San Diego later Thursday and was expected to be in the lineup Friday night when the Mariners open a three-game series against the Padres, general manager Pat Gillick told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Gillick would not discuss potential disciplinary action but said he and manager Lou Piniella spoke with Guillen before the flight.
"The only thing I can say from our standpoint is that this is a serious matter," Gillick told the P-I. "We will deal directly with the player on this...
"Carlos is concerned about it, and I think he and we understand the seriousness of it. The Mariners and the player aren't taking this lightly."
Guillen went 2-for-4 and scored a run in Seattle's 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals here Wednesday night. He is hitting .297 with six homers and 31 RBIs this season.
