SEATTLE - Seattle Mariners shortstop Carlos Guillen has been arrested for investigation of drunken driving, police said.
Guillen, 26, was stopped early Thursday by police in suburban Clyde Hill who said he was going 89 mph in a 60 mph zone in his 2002 Mercedes.
He refused to take a Breathalyzer test when taken to the police station, resulting in automatic suspension of his driver's license, Clyde Hill Police Chief Bill Archer said.
"This is a very serious matter, and we're taking it very seriously," Seattle Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale told KOMO 4 News.
Guillen was with the team on a flight to San Diego later Thursday and was expected to be in the lineup Friday night when the Mariners open a three-game series against the Padres, general
manager Pat Gillick told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Gillick would not discuss potential disciplinary action but said he and manager Lou Piniella spoke with Guillen before the flight.
"The only thing I can say from our standpoint is that this is a serious matter," Gillick told the P-I. "We will deal directly with the player on this...
"Carlos is concerned about it, and I think he and we understand the seriousness of it. The Mariners and the player aren't taking this lightly."
Guillen went 2-for-4 and scored a run in Seattle's 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals here Wednesday night. He is hitting .297 with six homers and 31 RBIs this season.
